If you miss and trigger the checkpoint on the lower platform you’ll need to restart the level to try again, if you don’t trigger it you can just jump off the side. To fly as far as possible you should hold the controller tilted back the whole way, then jump when you want to drop. Also at the second Checkpoint, head left along the cliff to find a Bot kneeling in front of a lad with a staff. The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus.

The update released for all PlayStation 5 users without warning today, bringing a handful of new goodies, a new area, and even a few new missions to complete. It’s enough content to keep you busy for around an hour or so longer, but considering Astro’s Playroom came free for anyone who owns a PS5, it’s more than enough reason to celebrate. PlayStation and Team Asobi have dropped a surprise update for Astro’s Playroom in celebration of the reveal of its full-fledged Astro title, Astro Bot. Maybe the most impressive piece of the PlayStation 5 hardware is its new controller, but it’ll only be as good as the games that support it. Transcending its role as an introduction to the PS5’s features, Astro’s Playroom is a quick and delightful celebration of PlayStation’s history.
The game is a fantastic tech demo for the DualSense controller while also being an enjoyable platformer in its own right. Astro’s Playroom has been described as a love letter to PlayStation, as the game is full of references to past and present Sony franchises. As you’re exploring Playroom’s levels you’ll also stumble across Astro Bots wearing a blue cap and holding a camera. They’re mostly there for the fun of it all rather than to accumulate anything, but every single one of them made me smile, even the few that I had to take a moment to try and guess at. I won’t spoil any more here so as to not rob anyone of the joy of first discovering them.
Two of these levels involve regular platforming whereas the other two involve a special power-up suit which makes use of the DualSense controller’s capabilities. luck8 is the ball suit in which the player must swipe the touchpad to guide the ball. If Astro Bot falls or gets defeated, the level will restart from the latest checkpoint cleared. For starters, the load times are super-fast thanks to the SSD so getting into and out of levels never has you waiting. Even better is that if you find that you missed some collectibles and want to go back to get them then pulling up the Activities menu will give you options to instantly jump to where you need to go.

This references Dance Dance Revolution, a popular arcade game developed by Konami that was ported to the PS1 in 1999 exclusively in Japan. The game came bundled with a dance mat, but could also be played using a controller. One of the rewards in the Gacha game is a Bot playing with two Move Controllers and a PS VR headset. The movement of the Move Controllers are incredibly similar to 2019’s Beat Saber on PS4 by Beat Games. Beat Saber is one of the premiere games of PS VR, alongside Astro Bot Rescue Mission. In the Labo area is a Bot using a PS1 controller to drive a red car around him.
Here you’ll see a Bot with a triangular object on its head pulling a hapless victim. This is Pyramid Head from 2001’s Silent Hill 2 on PS2, developed by Team Silen in Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. Pyramid Head is a manifestation of the protagonist James Sunderland’s guilt and want for punishment. After first using the Hang Glider, check the side of the column on the left side of the landing zone to see a Bot walking on a wall. This references Kat of Gravity Rush, released on PSVita in 2012 and developed by SIE Japan Studio. As should be evident, Kat has the ability to change the direction of gravity.
The game runs at a full 4K resolution and a smooth 60fps as well and it makes great use of its color palette and lighting. The soundtrack is catchy and playful just as you would expect from a platformer and the 3D audio really helps add to the immersion. The speaker on the DualSense controller plays a lot of sounds out of it which is something I always enjoy and each one is done really well here to help add to the experience. The trophy hunters out there will even find 46 trophies here including a Platinum.
This section only lists games whose only easter eggs were in the Trophy list. Games who had others within the game itself are listed above instead. Once you get to the very top of Mt. Motherboard, on the right you can see a Bot in a white cloak fighting against the wind. The character is a White Cloak, unlocked by finding all the Symbols in the game, and the struggle against the snow refers to the famous snowstorm finale.

Artifact 2/2 “PlayStation Game Disc” – After jumping the gap with the bowling pin in front, go to the right across the pair of moving platforms to find this artifact. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Once in the main area where you are rolling around as a ball, this puzzle piece is underneath a bridge to the left.
After reaching the first Checkpoint in Caching Caves, look for a box frame structure in the ground you can drop into. In addition to a Puzzle Piece, you’ll see a Bot prancing down a line and clearing various shape-based obstacles. Vib-Ribbon was unique in that it loaded entirely into the PS1’s RAM, allowing players to insert their own music CDs to play levels to. On the right-hand side of the CRT pile at the end of the level are some Bots huddled around gaming on a CRT. The game they’re playing references Ridge Racer, released in 1997 for the PS1 and made by Delphine Software International. The title screen has close similarities to the original Ridge Racer and sequel Revolution, particularly the latter with a full-screen chequered flag.

Throw the cannister with the net inside at the blue aura when the lock-on symbol appears to reveal the Special Bot. Go under the bridge and immediately on your right pull the exposed cable cords to grab a throwable canister with a net inside. Punch the shell to reveal a steering wheel, then stand in front of it push the Options button to bring up the map. Go to the far right corner of the beach, next to the building, on the opposite side of where the Gran Turismo Astro Bot is. Proceed through the stage as normal until you reach the first dynamite enemy.
This references Everybody’s Golf VR by Clap Hanz, released in 2019. Up until the 2017 game, Everybody’s Golf was called Hot Shots Golf in North America. Level Completion Trophies are awarded for finishing specific stages in Astro Playroom.
Cloud servers are also available as an option to back up game saves for PS+ members. The “Wild Arms” Trophy, awarded for Spinning while firing the Gatling Gun in Deep Dataspace level of SSD Speedway, is a reference to 1996’s Wild ARMs on the PS1, developed by Media Vision. Wild ARMs is a Japanese role-playing game, and received a remake on the PS2 in 2003. The “Twisting Metal” Trophy, awarded for jumping three times whilst Spinning on ice, is a reference to 1995’s Twisted Metal for the PS1, developed by SingleTrac. A vehicular combat game, this is the origin of the evil clown Sweet Tooth, who drives the ice cream truck featured on the game’s cover. The “Project Neo” Trophy is a reference to the codename of the PS4 Pro.
